What the heck is Esports?
I had to look it up. Apparently all those console games like League of Legends where teams of players use avatars to battle each other in virtual arenas are now the subject of real-life gambling. Sites like SavageDraft.Com, SportsBetPhd.Com, ShotCritic.Net, and MMAWild.Com are now running ads for “Esports Betting” and I just had to find out what that was all about.
I don’t really have much to do with sports Websites. My friend Randy Ray is more into those topics. I take care of the system administration tasks on the sports sites and let him figure out what topics to post there. So when I saw the announcements about the Esports betting come through I was like, “What the fudge?” And looking up queries like “what is esports” or “what is esports betting” didn’t help much, either. Everyone assumes you know what the score is (pardon the pun).
So Esports are basically online tournaments in virtual gaming worlds and esports betting is what professional bookmakers handle for people who want to bet on these tournaments. Based on what I could learn the most popular games that people like to bet on include:
- League of Legends
- StarCraft 2 Legacy of the Void
- Counter Strike Global Offensive
- Dota 2
- Heroes of the Storm
Well, we learn something new everyday.

Gambling games are immensely popular even when you don’t put real money on the line. A lot of gambling games are now coming out as mobile apps, too.
